From your tent, campingcar, caravan, or cabin, you can often see the mist rising between the impressive mountain peaks around you. Read more
The Driva River meanders through the valley and is the lifeblood of the area. Several campsites are located along its banks, ideal for fishing, hiking, or simply relaxing with the sound of flowing water. Many campers visit the campsites in Oppdal not only for the impressive scenery and location along the E6, but also to participate in a musk ox safari or go rafting on the Driva River.
Oppdal isn't just a camping destination; it's a complete outdoor region. That's why many campers traveling through Norway choose to stay in Oppdal for an extended stay. To give you an idea, here's a brief overview of the possibilities:
• Hiking and cycling: numerous marked trails, from short family walks to mountain hikes in Dovrefjell.
• Rafting and fishing: the Driva River is a popular river for salmon fishing and wildwater activities.
• Winter sports: Oppdal Skisenter is one of the largest ski resorts in Central Norway, with slopes for all levels.
• Canoeing and kayaking: tranquil lakes and rivers in the area make it perfect for paddlers.
• Wildlife and photography: besides musk oxen, you can also spot reindeer, moose and countless bird species here.
One of the most unique activities you can enjoy in Oppdal is a musk ox safari. The musk ox is an impressive animal that dates back to the Ice Age. They resemble a cross between a buffalo and an aurochs, with a thick coat and a weight of up to 400 kilos.
During a musk ox safari, you'll embark on a hike with a local guide into Dovrefjell-Sundalsfjella National Park, searching for these animals in their natural habitat. Along the way, the guide will explain the behavior of the musk oxen, the flora and fauna of the park and ensure you can observe the animals from a safe distance.
Most safaris depart from Oppdal or Dombås and last from half a day to a full day. There are several operators in the region, but one worth mentioning is the former owner of Magalaupe Camping (see below). Ingmar Fjeldsetnes is a veteran and to preserve his knowledge of the musk ox, his granddaughter is now training with him as a musk ox guide.
A musk ox safari is an unforgettable experience. You hike through rugged mountain scenery, hearing nothing but the wind, and suddenly, there's that ancient animal in the distance. It's pure, quiet, and impressive.
For those who love action in nature, rafting in Oppdal is an absolute must. The Driva River flows right through the valley, offering the perfect mix of calmer stretches and wild rapids. Under the guidance of experienced guides, you'll brave the rushing water, surrounded by imposing mountains and green valleys.
Both beginners and experienced rafters are welcome: there are gentle family trips and more challenging routes with more adrenaline. The season runs from May to September, when the meltwater from the mountains gives the river extra power.
Afterward, you can relax right on the riverbank at many campsites in Oppdal—such as Granmo Camping—with a hot drink and a view of the Driva. Rafting in Oppdal is adventure, nature, and Norwegian freedom all rolled into one.
The campsites in Oppdal are all located (almost) directly along the E6. South of the center of Oppdal, where you'll find shops, restaurants, gas stations, and various amenities.
The E6, the main route from Southern to Northern Norway, runs right through Oppdal. This makes the area easily accessible—perfect for those traveling around Norway and wanting to spend a few days enjoying nature.
If you're traveling from Oslo to Trondheim, you'll see enormous differences. Personally, I find the area between Dombås and Oppdal the most spectacular on this section of the E6. The view is truly phenomenal:
