Far north in Norway, in the Finnmark region - you'll find several campsites in Alta. Alta is the last stop for many campers before continuing their journey to the North Cape, or on their way back. For this reason, you'll find several campsites around the town of Alta – also known as the City of the Northern Lights. These campsites are also open year-round. Read more
The campsites in Alta are all located just outside the town center. Here are two:
Alta River Camping: the name says it all, this campsite is located on a river. Several pitches are located directly along the Altaelva River. Both gravel and grass pitches are available. The campsite also offers a number of cabins for rent.
(Alta River Camping)
Solvang Camping Alta: this campsite is located just north of Alta, near the E6. Various accommodations are available for rent at Solvang Camping Alta. The campsite is very suitable for families with children. You'll find a lovely campfire area, a sauna, a playground and a living room with a TV.

Alta is a town with approximately 20.000 inhabitants and is - as mentioned - known as the city of the Northern Lights. In Alta, you'll find the Nordlyskathedralen:

a modern church known for its unique "spiral" shape. Built partly of wood and partly of concrete, it's covered with titanium plating. Alta has a pleasant town center with various shops, cafés and restaurants. The World Heritage Rock Art Centre (rock carvings and local prehistory) is also well worth a visit. If you'd like to hike in the Alta area, we recommend Alta Canyon, one of the largest canyons in Northern Europe.
Many campers at the campsites in Alta are on their way to and from the North Cape. Because it's about a 3- to 3.5-hour drive from Alta to the North Cape:

you'll see many campers at the campsites in Alta waiting for the weather on the island of Magerøya (where the North Cape is located) to improve before driving the final stretch. In summer, you can even drive at night, as it doesn't get dark all night. In winter, many campers visit Alta because the Northern Lights are particularly visible then.
